Breaking Boundaries Highway’s Melanie Lowe Relocates

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Highway's very own, Melanie Lowe, who has steadily been carving a name for herself in the music industry as a successful singer/song writer and performing artist, will be relocating at the end of this month to Johannesburg.

The past few years since finishing in the Top 3 of SA s first Idols, has been an eventful, challenging and also inspiring road. Long before Idols, Melanie dreamed of a place in the music industry, writing songs since the age of about 14, learning to play on an old, cheap guitar bought for her as a child for R5.00, and developing her singing skills since the age of 5.

Always aware that Idols would just be a stepping stone in the music industry, albeit a huge one, Melanie has worked tirelessly since finishing in the Top 3, performing all around around SA, taking her music to her fans everywhere. A proudly groomed ’Durbanite’, the move to Johannesburg will be a difficult one, leaving family and friends behind, but Melanie sees it as an important step. Having toured repeatedly in provinces such as the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Free State, and all around KZN, the time has come to focus for a while on the Johannesburg area.

According to Melanie, she will always be a Durban Girl , and she is definitely an uncompromisingly loyal Sharks supporter!

However, before she leaves, her fans will have a chance to see her performing at the Luna Lounge, at the Tastes of Africa Restaurant, 6 Clement Stott Road, Bothas Hill, on Friday evening, 27 June.

Woolworths Makes A Difference

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
On 10 June, the Grade 4 learners from Westville Senior Primary School participated in the Woolworths 'Making The Difference' programme. Making The Difference' is a programme designed for grade 4 learners and focuses on sharing Woolworths extensive knowledge around good food and nutrition.

The campaign also involves small local school visits to stores and suppliers throughout South Africa where learners are exposed to the full retail process from ordering and receiving to merchandising and selling.

Part of the experimental component of the programme involved a visit to Denny Mushroom, one of Woolworths' suppliers, were the learners had hands-on experience with the stages of growing mushrooms.

"Supplier visits are a wonderful opportunity to show learners how many of the products they take for granted are actually made. Instead of just learning about the various processes in class, students had the opportunity to experience different industries first hand.

Pinetown Businesses - Mean To Clean

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
GreenOffice has recently challenged other Pinetown and Durban businesses to donate an afternoon or even an hour of company time to take the responsibility of cleaning and greening the suburbs in which they operate in. This company would be delighted to hear from other businesses brave enough to rise up to this challenge and make a difference within their communities.

We challenge other companies in the greater Durban area to do something constructive to change our country rather than to sit back and complain, said Michelle De Nysschen, Social Responsibility Manager.

GreenOffice has two offices which consists of the head office in Durban and a branch in Johannesburg. This company focuses on the entire printing environment which includes consumables, service and maintenance, hardware and management software. Starting it one step at a time to create a better environment for all, green Office has initiated a cleaning and greening project.

True to our company slogan of Saving you the earth, green Office has established a strong campaign. We have started a staff volunteer project were our staff can nominate a charity or project of their choice and we will spend one work day either planting a vegetable garden or painting a school. However to kick this off we decided to start off with an afternoon rubbish pick-up project, said Social Responsibility Manager Michelle De Nyssschen.

KwaZulu Natal Education In The Spotlight

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

Reports compiled by the South African Institute of Race Relations have revealed that KZN has the second lowest pass rate at matric level. This province has scored a pass rate of 64 percent when compared to other provinces in the country such as the Western Cape which scored the highest matric pass rate of 80,6 percent for four consecutive years.

"This is a known fact but the real issue is that from 2004 the pass rate in KZN keeps dropping and we have had numerous meetings with the educational department but they are still doing nothing," said Mr Sipho KK Nkosi, provincial secretary of SADTU.

According to Mr Nkosi the problem is mainly in government schools who are experiencing problems such as overcrowding and a shortage of subject advisors.

"You have schools in Newlands for example, where you find extreme overcrowding. How can you expect a teacher to educate learners effectively under such conditions?" said Nkosi.
