An unforgattable evening

A special ball will be taking place soon in aid of raising funds for the Sunflower fund, whose sole purpose is to build the South African Bone Marrow registry in order to give hope to children with leukaemia.

The event which has attracted elite sponsors that have supported the Fund over the past four years, will take place on Friday, 7 May at Durban's Elangeni Hotel.

Pensioners rebates

Choir to captivate audience

Having gained international recognition, the Connection Zulu Choir from Kwa Nuyswa will be performing at a special gala concert at Sarepta Church in Gillets next weekend.

Thw Choir, which is comprised of 35 members, have gained recognition in Australia, and have performed over 20 sell-out concerts to over 10,000 people.

Swimming World cup braces Durban shores

The FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup will be held at the Kings Park Aquatic Centre in Durban between October 16 an 17.

Durbanites and swimming enthusiasts will enjoy the best of swimming talent. Among them is double short course breaststroke world record-holder Cameron vander Burgrh, who heads a list of top SA swimmers that will be looking to see a strong international challenge.

Tom Foolery on the Highbury stage

The event, which is in aid of the Domestic Animal Rescue, will be taking place at Momoco's coffee shop, situated on 168 Old Main Road in Bthas Hil, on October 10 and will run from 11 am to 4 pm.

Shomon is just one of the anticipated guests to perform on the day.

Talented singer/ songwriter, Shomon, will be performing and exclusive show on Saturday in support of charity.The event, which is in aid of the Domestic anmal Rescur, will be taking place at Momoco's coffee shop, situated on 168 Old Main Road in Bothas Hill, on October 10 and will run from 11am to 4pm.

Shomon is just one of the anticipated guests to perform on the day. The songstress has been described as 'a highly gifted guitarist/pianist whose powerful voice, and deeply moving compositions are an experience not to be missed.'She studied Opera at Sahmyook University, Seoul, South KOrea and recently spent a year at the Berklee School of Music in Boston, USA.

Foetus found in toilet

An abandoned foetus was discovered in a long drop toilet in Maraianhill last week.

The SAPs Search and Resuce and netcare Rescue Units were on scene to retrieve the baby from the toilet pit. Chris Botha from Netcare 911 described how members of the unit discovered the foetus.

"When we arrived on scene we were taken down a winding and very muddy pathway to an old toilet pit, the baby was wrapped in a plastic bag and thrown into partially covered pit approximately one an a half meters deep."

Choir perform gala evening

The internationally acclaimed Connection Zulu Choir, a gospel choir from Kwa Nuyswa, will be performing a gala concert at Sarepta Church in Gillets on October 17.

The Choir is made up of 35 people aged from 16 to 35 people aged from 16 to 35 includes one young Australian woman. They are well known in Australia, having toured Victoria, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory in 2007 and performed over 20 sell out concerts to over 10,000 people.

Beautiful gardens of the Highway Area

The gardens on display each has it's own unique and beautiful feel and offered a tranquil and serene brak form the fast paced life to members of the community that enjoyed the wonders of these gardens. All profits raised from this event will go to Highway charities.

Come see the open gardens

The Kloof Rotary Ann's will be hosting the Open Gardens this weekend, September 19 and 20, from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm in the kloof,Gillits and Hillcrest areas.

Refreshments will be served in the Highbury Preparatory Memorial Hall where members of the community will be able to browse and purchase various crafts and plants. Tickets cost R35, which allows entrance to all gardens and refreshments and all profits will go to Highway Charities. Tickets are available at the entrance of each garden.

Swine flu death leads to public warning

The death of a 23 year old pregnant woman due to swine flu has resulted in the Health Department issuing a warning that expecting mothers are amongst those at a heightened risk of contracting the virus.

According to department spokesperson, Chris Maxon the members of the community that are more vulnerable to be infected by H1N1 influenza includes pregnant women, children under five years, the elderly and people with a comprised immunity.

Hunt for suspects leads to heist

A family in Hillcrest were held up at gunpoint in the early hours of Tuesday morning, last week.

It was believed that there were at least two suspects involved took off with various stolen goods from the house as well as the family's car, a white Toyota Conquest.

" The quick response by Hillcrest SAPS enabled the description of the vehicle to be circulated on the SAPS radio, " said Clark.

Don't be a bully say SAPS

"I was extremely fortunate to be invited by Berea West Junior Primary School acting Principal Mrs Benchop to talk to all the children class by class, " said Westville SAPS officer, Cons Stephen Clark.

This formed part of an initiative that took place last week in which Clark delivered speeches and talks to the learners about the topic of bullying.

"I did two talks a day over seven days centering on bullying, a topical interest at the moment, and general good behaviour.

Accident leaves one dead and six injured

An accident on the M19 on Friday left one period dead, another in critical condition, three seriously injured and two with moderate injuries.

Derrick Banks of ER24 explained that the incident took place near the Dunkle Road off ramp at 6.40 am on Friday morning when a car left the road and struck the pedestrains that were standing along side the road waiting to go for work.

Love the babies

It was all smiles and joy on Thursday when over 100 bags filled with essential baby clothing and items were donated to mothers in needt at St Mary's Hospital in Marianhill on Thursday.

This initiative formed part of the Robin Hodd Foundation's Feed the Babies' Scheme which aims to provide new mothers from informal and disadvantaged communities with a hamper that contains essential items for the first year of the baby's life .

State of zoo animals questioned

Brian Boswell, zookeeper of the of the Brain Boswell Circus and owner of the Natal Zoological Gardens and Natal Lion Park, recently launched a high court application to stop Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife from enforcing conditions to his licenses and permits.

Boswell stands accused by Emzemvelo for keeping animals in conditions that are 'unacceptable'. According to papers put forth to judge Ron Mclaren in the Pietermartitzbrg high court recently, the living conditions in which the animals were found when an inspection of the lion park was conducted last year were 'appaling'.

Pensioners Tea

The Kloof SPCA will be hosting a delightful Tea for Pensioners of the Upper Highway Area on July 30.

This follows the two previous and highly successful Pensioners Teas that were held at the Kloof and Highway SPCA last year. The tea will start at 10am and will feature a variety of activities.

This will include a guest speaker addressing the importance of having a "Will" or Updating your "Will", entertainment and tasty treats and refreshments.

In addition to this, some of the charity shops will be open on the day, including Memory Lane (Antiques and Collectables), Books, Attic and the Plant Nursery.

No insurance payout for faked death

A provisional trial date was set and an indictment was served by the State last week, in the Pinetown magistrate's court, on the two accused for involvement in the alleged faked death of a businessman.

The incident took place last year. According to Pinetown SAPS Insp Solomon Mbele, a body was found burnt in a bakkie in Kloof.

In a statement last year, Mbele explained that the owner of the bakkie, Sandragasen Chetty (44), allegedly faked his own death together with his 29 year old cousin, Dayalen Reddy. They were charged for murder and defeating the ends of justice.

Two up and coming artista share the stage

Port Elizabeth based songstress, Meri Ke, will be appearing in the Highway area for an exclusive show alongside local performer Shannon Connolly on Friday.

The event will take place at Luna Lounge. 16 Dan Pienaar Road, near Kloof High School and will start at 7.30pm. Ke picked up a guitar at the tender age of eight and has been developing her skills ever since. She launched her debut album. "In a moment", at the end of 2008 and has been performing numerous shows ever since name acts such as The Awakening, Matthew van der Want and Chris Letcher, Kaolin Thomson and Mr Barleycorn.

Connolly has been to Europe where she tested the waters in London, busked the chilly streets of Galway, Ireland and spent two summers playing on a picturesque Greek island.
